How do I take care of my CoDrone EDU batteries?

CoDrone EDU uses lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries, which require special care and handling to ensure both safety and longevity. Proper maintenance will help you avoid accidents, maximize flight performance, and get the most out of each battery.

This article is divided into sections to help you with daily care, long-term storage, and how to identify when a battery should be replaced.

Daily Use and Care

Here are a few best practices to follow during class or normal flight sessions:

  1. Always remove the battery from the drone after flying, even during short breaks. Leaving a battery connected can slowly drain it and shorten its lifespan.
  2. Let the battery cool down after a flight before placing it on a charger. Charging a warm battery can degrade its performance over time.
  3. Avoid flying the drone until it auto-lands. This causes deep discharging, which is harmful to LiPo batteries. Instead, land the drone manually when you hear the low battery buzzer and see red blinking lights, indicating that the battery is low.
  4. Charge batteries in a fire-safe, non-flammable area under supervision. Never leave charging batteries unattended.
  5. Use only the included multi-battery charger that comes with your kit
  6. Avoid leaving batteries on the charger for extended periods. Continuously keeping batteries plugged in for days at a time can reduce their lifespan and increase the risk of swelling or damage over time.

How to Tell if a Battery Is Going Bad

Not all battery issues are visible. Here's what to look out for:

  1. Reduced Flight Time: If a battery consistently provides less than 3 minutes of flight on a full charge, it may be deteriorating.
  2. Sudden Shutdowns: If the drone shuts off mid-flight despite having battery life remaining, the battery may not be holding charge properly.
  3. Swelling or Puffiness: If the battery looks swollen, bloated, or feels soft when gently squeezed, stop using it immediately.
  4. Charging Problems: If a battery charges unusually fast or never reaches full charge (red LED on charger stays on), this can indicate internal damage.

  5. Physical Damage: Any puncture marks, cuts, or exposed wiring are clear signs the battery is no longer safe to use.

If you suspect a battery is bad, do not attempt to use or recharge it. Follow your local disposal guidelines or contact Robolink for recommendations on safe disposal.

Storage Tips for Daily Use

When storing your batteries at the end of the day:

  1. Remove the battery from the drone. Leaving it inserted can accidentally power on the drone and drain the battery or damage components.
  2. Do not store in an airtight container. Use a ventilated box or tray in a cool, dry space.
  3. Never leave batteries connected to chargers. Disconnect once charging is complete.
  4. Keep them out of direct sunlight or high heat areas, such as near windows or in a car.

Storage Tips for Extended Periods (1+ Month)

If you’re storing batteries over long breaks (summer, holidays, etc.), follow these guidelines:

  1. Store at 3.8 volts per cell, the recommended "storage voltage."
    You can estimate this by connecting to Blockly and checking the battery percentage:
  2. 60%–70% charge ≈ 3.8 volts (when measured at rest, not in flight)
  3. Ideal temperature range: 0°C to 25°C (32°F to 77°F)
  4. Avoid humidity and moisture. Store in a dry area with low humidity.
  5. Do not store in an airtight container. Use a well-ventilated box or LiPo-safe bag.
  6. For large quantities (20+ batteries): Consider using a fireproof LiPo-safe container.

Always inspect batteries before storing. Never store a battery that is swollen, punctured, or damaged.

When to Retire a Battery

If your battery shows any signs listed above—swelling, poor performance, or charging irregularities—it’s time to dispose of it safely.

  • Do not throw LiPo batteries in the trash.
  • Contact your local recycling center or e-waste facility to handle battery disposal properly.
